3:30am and I am hungry.

On demand fast food is a common-place element of our culture and society. Fortunately for us, our appetites can be satiated round the clock, and even at hours when all are asleep... or probably should be. I set out to capture the working lives of those who are a part of our societal desire for 24-hour eating and I discovered much more than grainy photos and cholesterol at such an ungodly hour... I found normal people who are just as tired as any of us would be working the graveyard shift and being photographed at 3:30am. I wanted candid photos so I did not ask anyone to pose or attempt to portray their feelings anyway other than what they actually do. There is something inherently captivating with the wee hours of the morning, and understandably there is a catering niche for restless and somewhat crazy people like myself. If it were not for these intrepid workers who allow us access to rather unhealthy options of cuisine, I would probably have to resort to something extreme... like going to bed at a reasonable hour.

  1. I really like the facial expressions on these. They very honestly depict the everyday grind.

  2. yea, the facial expressions are great, and I love the 'big gulp' in the one picture, it just wouldn't be the same without it. ;)

  3. I love the ones where the workers are looking at you. You can just read their minds. It's great.

  4. I like that just by looking at the pictures, you feel like it's really late and everyone is feeling the kind of exhaustion one can only feel at 3 a.m. My favorite is the first picture of the woman in the cafeteria. Her wrinkles and facial expression say it all. I feel tired for her.

  5. I really love the photo where you can't tell which person is the cashier (7-11). Some of these photos should maybe be cropped across the top or bottom, but they're all really good compositionally. I really like the lines from cleaning in the bottom one.

  6. I love the personality that exists in your shots. The colors are drab and dull, and the attitude of the workers is priceless. I also love that Missy now works at 711.

  7. While the facial expression of the woman in your third photo is excellent for portraying your theme, I think the last photo was my favorite. The man cleaning the floor really gives the feel of the late night/end of day. I think the way you tweaked the colors really added to the feel of your topic.

  8. I love this project. Each photo tells a story because of their expressions, but all of them together? Amazing.

  10. I think your text at the beginning of your essay really strengthened the whole. I could sense what you were trying to convey in your photos. I especially like photos 1, 3, and 4. well done.

  12. This is one of my favorites. Great idea. Your photos maintain a rough grey style to them which matches the time of day you took them at.
