Between Two Worlds. I Spy at EFY

It seems like everyone at BYU has been to or at least knows about EFY. Since I've started working there, people have been surprised to know that I'm not a counselor and I work when its not summer. There are actually quite a few people working overtime behind the scenes to make it all come together in the summertime. As however, they are literally "behind" the scenes, nobody knows about them. For my photo essay I decided to document the other, non-glamourous side of the hard-working people at EFY. Welcome to the EFY office.

  1. The sniper angles from above and the hidden camera shots behind objects work really well for the "i spy" theme. Good choice of sepia tone at the end.

  2. If you just take the first four photos, this is one of my favorite essays. I like the soft-filter feel that runs throughout, and the I'm-so-candid-I'm-sneaking-up-behind-you-and-shooting-through-the-cracks feel. The continuity is great, but then it falls off.

  3. I love the "spyglass" feel in the first section. Seeing what people do when they don't know someone is watching is a great basis in my opinion. Stay true to that!

  4. The spying dimension of your photographs brings the brunt of focus off of the subjects by at least half, and shares it with the action of spying itself. The action of spying becomes in some ways the star of the essay, and the emphasis of the work becomes the sneaking.

I like the fact that subtly, your theme implies not only work, but a third-party judgment of that work.

Having never worked an EFY, I'm impressed how much the social aspect of spying on others applies to other settings, like a normal office, where people constantly compare their performance with their co-workers.

    Neat theme.

  5. I really like the first picture of your essay. I like the blur on the left third of the picture and the fact that the photo is in black and white adds to the radio scene. I think the different color schemes you used really added to the theme of your essay.

  7. I like how you went out on a limb and did such a unique idea.

  8. Great idea. I agree with Prof Olivier that I kind of got lost from the office setting to all of a sudden you are outside or the shot with the gloves on your lap. Also, I think you should stick with color photos or black and white. Maybe black and white because of the way you kind of spied on the people. It gives a more PI kind of feel.
