The Faces of Radio

I had a ton of ideas for this photo essay, but I figured it was just best to stick with what I know. I work for KBYU FM Radio. I am not a communications major, or really anything close, but I love the "hole in the wall" feel of the station. The photos I chose show the process of radio production and what I see going on everyday at work.

When I listen to the radio, I imagine what the person, whose voice I hear, actually looks like. I wonder if the man with the deep voice is tall, dark, and handsome, the real rugged American type? In reality, he is relatively short, stout, and Canadian. The women with the sultry voice must be gorgeous, right? Wrong. She is a middle-aged mom with reading glasses and short mousey-brown hair. I was shocked to discover that other than a handful of full-time staff, the radio is predominately run by students. It was an adventure for me to uncover the true faces of radio.

And so the work day begins...This is what I see everyday when I first come into work.

Each day of music is logged. Logs have to be prepared by finding the missing CD's. There are just a few thousand from which to choose.

After having found what songs are missing in the database, each song has to be ripped into the computer. That's my job. I work in a modified storage closet.

Now the music tracks are ripped in, and the announcers can record the voice tracks. Some get an actual room in which to record...

...while others only get a free standing box in the middle of the room.

My favorite part is the "live" radio. I can watch people talk in the microphone while listening to what their saying through the rado at the same time. Sometimes I have the urge to interrupt so I can be on the air, but I never do.

  1. hey hey! I know someone who works there... two actually since I know you as well... I like the alternating color and black and white, that was a good way to use both without making one seem out of place.

  2. I love the picture of the girl from behind. Great composition and coloring and angle. I also really like the last one.

  3. I don't really think that the black and white add anything. Also, the picture of the girl from the back doesn't really go with the rest of the project

  4. I disagree about the 'girl' from the back. I think that this picture has very interesting lines. The vertical lines on the side impose a rigid frame but the hour-glass curves of the subject (sorry, I'm not trying to be creepy, I know it's a self-portrait) make the subject jump out as organic and out of place, which works because, after all, you're crammed in a tiny little storage closet, right?

  5. I really like how a majority of these pictures are in (what at least look like) tight spaces. It makes me feel like I understand the work a little better, somehow. I kind of want to see the second photo (the one with the bookshelves of CDs) in color. It works in black and white, but it also makes me want to see the colors of the CDs and his sweater.

  6. I think that the last picture is really cool! I also like the concept because it's interesting to be able to see images of a radio station since you can't see anything when you're listening to the radio.

  7. This is a good subject and I think you've covered much of the happenings and their environment in radio. I would do all the pix in b/w to add to a feeling of outdatedness or age. You've used different angles, good variation and perspective into the radio world.

  8. I really liked your idea of this subject. Like we said in class the photo of the guy in the booth is a little off, but a great idea. Also, the alternation between color and black and white throws me off a little, I kinda like just the black and white all the way through.

  9. Two of the photos, the ones of the guys in the head-set are a little redundant. I love the pictures. The only thing I might change is make them all in color or all in black and white. But I love the color of the first shot, and there was probably some interesting color with all the cd's in your second photo
