Nathan Oaks

There are many reasons why we choose our own career path. And many reasons why we don't choose another particular career path. I believe that social pressure from a variety of sources plays a large role in this process. For some, parents might encourage their children work in a certain field. Sometimes society decides what jobs are reputable. In my case, my own obsession with being an 'over-achiever' tells me that I am not successful unless I go to Medical School. Consequently, I may lose the opportunity to work in a field that truly fascinates me. These photos represent my friends and family who, unlike many have the courage to follow their passions and simple temporal needs rather than their desire for social status or their wallets. They seem to embody this idea of contentment with who they are and how that affects their profession.

  1. I like that your photos are personal, you can kind of tell in the expressions that they aren't strangers and that gives them a unique feel.

  2. My feeling is that you have good, interesting photos of subjects (especially Janitor James), but taken as a whole I feel like this essay is really only interesting to you because the only thread running through it is that they are all people you know

  3. I like the reason you chose your subjects and it definitely conveys a strong personal message.

  4. I really like the photo of the janitor. He's so relaxed, and he has such an amazing pose. The photo of the girl in the bakery seems too dark. Can you lighten it somehow? I really liked this essay because everyone seems so natural.

  5. I think if the pianist and the cupcake worker were looking at the camera those photos would be much more engaging. Also, I think for the next essay you could have a much stronger (and obvious) theme that anyone would recognize without needing further explanation.

  6. I like the fact that these are people you know, because you can tell by their expressions that these people feel very comfortable in front of the camera. It makes the pictures more interesting, I think.

  7. I love that you had all the people pose. There is great continuity in the style of the photos because of it, and also because of the colors. You're right, their expression do convey a sort of satisfaction with their work.
