A Lost Art

I have grown up in a family of mechanics so I thought every family just fixed things themselves when they broke. It was not until high school when I was one of the only ones changing my own oil that I realized that the day and age of the handyman was dwindling.

My parents own a forklift business and I think that some of the most interesting people I have met in my life have walked through their front doors, from the family man to the wanted. Speaking of, at one of the places I went to take photos for this assignment that manager went out and asked each employee if they had any warrants out for their arrest before I was allowed to take their photo. When I went to take one mechanics photo he said I was not allowed to take his photo, "for legal reasons..." Like I said I have met some of the most interesting people. I think these photos speak for themselves.

  1. i would play a little more with color. to me a mechanic is covered in oil and his outfit is filthy. the bright colors, especially in shot 3 are distracting.

  2. I like the dark, gritty scenery in these photos. Very urban cultural. Way to keep a uniform theme throughout.

  3. I really liked the subject of your essay. I do think though that having the text first would have been helpful. It would have given your viewer some context while viewing the photos.

  4. Nice theme. I think in some of your pictures the worker is lost and cars become the focus of the picture - the second to last especially. I did like the lighting/colors and thought they went well with the theme.

  5. I like these a lot! These people are so different from most people I see daily, which makes the pictures more compelling.

  6. I particularly like the first shot because of how the machinery etc. sort of engulf him, surround him. In general, i think tighter shots on the subjects might've been more effective, but that's probably just my personal preference.

  7. Good shot composition overall. None of what they are working on is commonplace in cars today. They all are older and have older hairstyles etc. I like it. You could use a couple better photos off the top. I like some of the photos where the shop is empty around them, they are dying off sort of a thing. Maybe some b/w would work well here too to accentuate grease and dirt and oldness in the trade.

  8. Great idea, and great photos. I thought the text and the photos went well together to show these mechanics at work. Interesting folks.

  10. I think if you played with black and white or some sort of antique effect, it might be cool to emphasize "A Lost Art" feel. I love the people in your pictures though.

  11. I really like the choice of venue for this essay. Nobody looks at mechanics, we just look past them. The workers looking directly at you is really effective. Great Job.
