Jessica Sheridan - Aspiring Stylists

After being rejected by bartenders and tanning salon receptionists I FINALLY found a group that would let me photograph them: aspiring stylists of the Marinello School of Beauty. I wanted to convey the distinct personality (and stereotypes...) of hair stylists in this photo essay.

  1. The angles and attitude in these photos are amazing.

  2. I like your pictures. Very stylish. However, they are quite grainy as you said...for some it works, not so much for others

  3. I think more than anything this essay uses technique to make a statement. That everything feels very contrived and glossy and glam seems to be exactly the point you are making about the profession, or at least the way it is perceived. One small detail that I think is distracting is that if these photos are supposed to have an artificial/superficial feel to them, then I would have liked to have seen the blonde/pink comb girl's teeth whitened. The yellowish hue betrays the whole message of the essay. Like I said, a small detail

  4. I don't mind the grain. It portrays a sort of fakeness or unnatural color. That is what these people do for a living.

  5. This was one of my favorite posts. I love how studio these photos look. Its perfect for the theme. The third to last one is my favorite. Nice job, overall. It worked

  6. I have to hand it to you for one thing in particular - kicking out the saturation made your photo grain not only acceptable, but I feel it contributes strongly.

  7. I like the concept and think the pictures tell the story well. I would say you could have maybe even added some more light and reflection/shine to the images to really make them fell "hollywood". Perhaps have a few ladies pose together. Great individual shots, but subject repetition and angles get a little boring by the end. Super duper overall.

  8. I really love these photos and the way you captured the subjects being who we really look at them as. Well...it's an over generalization, but they bring it upon themselves. I love the colors and the way you photographed the girls like they were at a photo shoot.

  9. I really like the photo with the girl blow drying her own hair. It looks like a model shoot, and she's got a nice glam smile, but you can totally see that she's holding the blow dryer herself! I think that was an excellent choice to not crop that out because it kind of symbolizes the superficiality of fashion and hair styling in general. Showing the blow dryer also show just how contrived and artificial fashion is.

  10. The use of color and contrast is really unique. It really seems like you thought about the composition a lot. I feel like I could see one of these photos in a salon as an actual decoration.
